چکیده

and contributions In this thesis a novel approach to analysis and processing of classical cartoon animations is presented. It focuses on a popular animation technique where each frame is created as a planar composition of two visually distinct layers: static textural background and dynamic homogenous foreground. The aim of the proposed framework is (1) to precisely detach these two layers to reach the state before the final composition and (2) to estimate structural correspondences between animation frames and homogenous regions in the foreground layer. Such analysis allows to partially understand the 2.5D structure of classical cartoon animations that is crucial for numerous applications including semi-automatic colorization, example-based synthesis, and video compression. The main contributions of the thesis: 1. Unsupervised sub-pixel accurate outline detection and image segmentation algorithms suitable for cartoon images where outlines represent region boundaries. 2. Hierarchical estimation of frame-to-frame and region-to-region correspondences based on local structural similarity and neighborhood relations. 3. Example-based approach to semi-automatic colorization of black-and-white cartoon animations dramatically reducing the amount of manual interventions. 4. Example-based synthesis of cartoon animations using an intuitive scribble-based interface allowing to quickly sketch new cartoon characters and poses in the style of masters. 5. Efficient video compression technique for classical cartoon animations based on a hybrid encoding scheme providing state-of-the-art visual quality for low encoding bit-rates.

Video Codec for Classical Cartoon Animations with Hardware Accelerated Playback

We introduce a novel approach to video compression which is suitable for traditional outline-based cartoon animations. In this case the dynamic foreground consists of several homogeneous regions and the background is static textural image. For this drawing style we show how to recover hybrid representation where the background is stored as a single bitmap and the foreground as a sequence of vec...

Adding Depth to Classical Cartoon Animations

Theatres featuring stereoscopic projection such as IMAX become extremely popular in last decade and attract large audience. However, key limiting factor for such cinemas is expensive movie acquisition phase. Lack of depth information in classical film footage restricts offer to movies created by specialized multi-camera system or 3D computer animation. In this project we focus on developing a s...

Stylized lighting for cartoon shader

In the context of non-photorealistic imaging, such as digital cel animation, lighting is symbolic and stylized to depict the scene’s mood and the geometric or physical features of the objects in the scene. Stylized light and shade should therefore be intentionally animated rather than rigorously simulated. However, it is difficult to achieve smooth animation of light and shade that are stylized...

A tool for designing MPEG-4 compliant expressions and animations on VRML cartoon-faces

We present a design environment which allows the generation, modification, and visual speech animation of 3D cartoon-like faces – Tinky. Our underlying face model is not based on a set of independent parameters that control specific abstract muscle emulations but is directed by a set of objects representing the elements of the face. In order to provide an easy to use authoring system producing ...

Social Factors in Cartoon Analysis through French Specialists

Since their appearance, cartoons and their creators took interest in social and political facts and figures. Often a more direct witness than a text, cartoons were quickly transformed from their initial entertaining role, to a tool to attack oppressors and reveal social injustices. To easily communicate with their public, they had to share the same codes and experiences that lived their audienc...
